It is a Thursday and the chairs are going up on the stacks, four to a stack, the way the man who does the hall insists on and nobody argues about. The meeting is over. People are standing about in coats not leaving. Somebody has taken the good cookies home in a napkin, which happens every week and which everybody has agreed not to mention.
She is folding the tablecloth. She folds it in half and then in half again and runs her hand down the crease, which takes eleven seconds, and she is going to be finished with it in a moment and she is looking for the next thing to hold.
Because two minutes ago somebody asked the room a question, and the answer came up in her whole body at once, the way it does, all of it arriving before she has decided anything. It was a good answer. She knows it was a good answer. It is sitting in the back of her mouth right now with nowhere to go, and in about ninety seconds somebody else will say two thirds of it, and she will nod along, and the meeting notes will have his name next to it.
Eleven years ago in this same hall she was twenty-six and she put her hand up.
She does not need to work at the memory. It is not a wound she keeps opening, it is just there, at the same volume as the day it happened. She said the thing that came to her. She said it plainly, without softening it, the way it had arrived. And a man three chairs down repeated it back in a funny voice.
That is all. That is the whole event.
The room laughed. Not cruelly. It was a two second laugh, the kind that goes around a tired meeting and lets everybody breathe out, and then the discussion carried on and somebody put the heating up and nobody thought about it again. I would say without much doubt that the man three chairs down could not tell you one thing about that evening, and I would be right.
And she went home and made a rule.
Never the first thing. Wait until two other people have spoken. Then say it, third, as a question, with a little laugh at the front so it can be taken as nothing if it lands wrong. Eleven years of that. Two churches, four jobs, one very good friend who has never once heard her say a sentence that arrived whole.
They call her quiet. She has heard herself described as a good listener so many times that she has started saying it about herself, which is the part I want to take off her tonight.
The chairs go up. She puts the folded cloth in the cupboard where it lives, and she says goodnight, and she carries it out to the car with her, the thing that came to her first, unsaid, again.
You know this. Maybe it was not a hall and maybe it was not a laugh. Maybe nobody laughed at all, maybe it was one face doing something small, or a sentence somebody said once about you that you were not supposed to hear. But you know what it is to have handed something of yourself over in a single second, and to have lived under the terms of it for a decade, and to have never told anybody that the transfer took place.
Nothing changed hands, and it cost you eleven years
There is a verse in Isaiah so short that people read straight past it, and it is one of the most exact sentences in the Bible about what happened to you.
For thus says the Lord, You have given yourselves away for nothing, and you shall be redeemed without money.Isaiah 52:3
Look at what God is saying about the first half. You gave yourselves away for nothing. Not for a fortune. Not for something worth having. For nothing. Nothing came back. Nothing changed hands. There was no transaction at all, which is the strangest thing about it, because you have been living under the terms of it ever since.
That is exactly what happened in the hall. She handed over the first thing that comes to her, permanently, and the room received nothing. Nobody gained a thing. No one there even knows a handover took place. A two second laugh and eleven years of a rule, and not one person walked away holding what she put down.
You are living under terms nobody ever agreed with you, and no one on the other side is even holding a copy. Scripture says you gave yourself away for nothing, and it is the Holy Spirit, not clever reasoning, who takes that word nothing and finally lets it mean nothing in a woman who has treated it as binding since she was twenty-six.
And now the second half, and it matches the first on purpose. You shall be redeemed without money. Nothing counted on the way out. Nothing counted on the way back. There is no sum to be found here, in either direction. Nobody is going to ask you to produce anything, prove anything, or make up the ground of the last eleven years before the thing comes back to you.
You are being bought back without a single thing that could be counted, and you are contributing none of it. It is written that we are justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, and the same Spirit who raised Him is the one who makes the word freely land in a woman who has been quietly working off a two second laugh for a decade.
What was leaned on was never a signature
I am not going to ask you what yours was. Not once, not gently, not by listing a few and watching your face. It is yours, and God is not requiring an inventory as the condition of moving on it.
But there is a thing I have to say plainly, because in a message like this it is the difference between freedom and another layer of weight.
Not everybody handed theirs over. Some of you did not give anything away at all. Some of you were leaned on, worked on, worn down over months and years by somebody who knew exactly what they were doing, and there came a day when you went quiet or went along with it or stopped saying the thing, and you have filed that day ever since under my own fault. A signature somebody leaned on is not a signature. What was taken from you is not what you spent, and God has never once confused the two, even in the years you have.
You are not standing in front of a God who is unclear about which of those it was. His word says He knows our frame and remembers that we are dust, and it is the Holy Spirit who can tell a wound from a wrong inside you, which nobody lying awake at one in the morning has ever managed on their own.
And whichever it was, the buying back is the same buying back. That is the mercy of the way this is built. He does not run two systems. He does not have a shorter route for the ones with a better excuse.
You have been bought back on the same terms as everybody else in the room, and the terms had nothing to do with how you lost it. Scripture says in Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to His grace, and the Holy Spirit is the one who applies the word His to every part of that sentence, including the part you keep trying to take responsibility for.
Here is the one thing being bought back tonight, and I want it named, because a message that hands you redemption in general has handed you nothing you can carry out of the room.
The first thing that comes to you.
Not your confidence, in the abstract. Not your personality. The specific thing: the answer that arrives whole, before you have decided anything, that you have been putting in the back of your mouth for eleven years and carrying out to the car.
You are holding it back right now, and it was never the room's to take. His word says God has not given us the spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind, and the Holy Spirit is the one who calls what rises in you sound, which is a word you have not applied to your own first thought since you were twenty-six.
The record stands. It happened. He is not going to tell you the laugh was in your head, or that you should have been tougher, or that eleven years of the third thing said as a question was an overreaction. It was a real event and it had a real cost and God is not in the business of making a woman lie about her own life.
The record stands. The verdict is changed. You are not the woman who says the wrong thing. That verdict was handed down in a tired meeting by a room that was not qualified to give it and has long since forgotten it did.
You have been given your own first thought back, and the giving back is finished whether or not you feel brave on Thursday. It is written that where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty, and the same Spirit is the one who makes liberty a thing that has already been established rather than a thing you are working up to.
Declare this over yourself
You are not talking yourself into courage. An ambassador does not manufacture what he carries, he speaks what the King has already settled, and this was settled long before Thursday. So speak these out loud, and leave the outcome with Him, however He answers and whatever He does with the rooms you walk into.
- Laugh in that hall, you are eleven years old and you are finished, and you do not get to sit in my mouth one more evening. Scripture says I gave myself away for nothing and I am bought back without anything that can be counted, so nothing was ever owed and nothing is owed now. In the name of Jesus, I am opening my mouth.
- Rule that I never say the first thing, you are broken tonight, and you do not get the third thing and the little laugh at the front either. His word says God has not given me a spirit of fear but of power and love and a sound mind, and the Holy Spirit is the one who calls what rises in me sound. I am giving the room my first thought.
- Jesus, You bought me back without one thing that could be counted, and You never asked me to earn my voice back first. Your word says I was given away for nothing and redeemed without money, and Your Spirit is the one putting the rope back into my hands. I am saying the first thing this week, and I am saying it in Your name.
