A Hundred Miles Every Month

This message is for the man who has driven a hundred miles every month for eleven years to keep a sentence he passed on himself, and who cannot say out loud what he thinks would happen if he stopped

First Saturday. The alarm goes at four twenty and he is on the highway by ten of five with the mower and the trimmer strapped in the bed and a travel mug wedged in beside the seat.

A hundred miles. He knows every mile of it the way you know a hymn. The long left bend where the fog sits, the crossroads with the leaning sign, the stretch after the river where the sun comes up on his left and floods the whole cab and he has to put a hand up. Eleven years of first Saturdays.

At the far end of the county there is a small church with a churchyard around it, and he does the whole thing. Mows it, trims around every stone, hauls the clippings, cuts back the hedge in the fall, does the gutters in the spring, and drives home in the afternoon. The people there are glad of him. He is well liked. He is that man who comes and does the yard, and the two women who do the flowers save him a plate.

Nobody there has ever asked him why he started, and nobody there knows what happened eleven years ago, and he has never told a living soul in that county.

He is good at it. It is genuinely good work and the place looks better than it has ever looked and it is a real kindness to real people. Any honest person watching would say so.

Here is the tell.

Two years ago he was sick with something for a week, and it fell on a first Saturday, and he lay there in the dark at four twenty in the morning with a fever and did the arithmetic on whether he could drive. Could not. And he lay there and something moved through him that he has never described to anybody, and the closest he has come to naming it, alone in the truck, is that it felt like a door closing.

He went the following Saturday and did double. Cut the hedge as well. Stayed till the light went.

And he has never once said out loud what he thinks would happen if he simply did not go. He has not said it to his wife, who has asked him twice in eleven years, gently, whether he ever thinks about stopping, and both times he said the yard would go to seed and changed the subject.

The sun comes up on the stretch past the river and floods the cab, and he puts his hand up against it, and drives on.

You know this. I am not going to ask you what you are making up for and I am not going to guess at it. But you know exactly what it is to have a good thing in your life that you cannot stop doing, and to have never once let yourself finish the sentence that begins with the words if I stopped.

Once

There is one word in the middle of this and everything turns on it.

For Christ also suffered once for sins, the just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God.1 Peter 3:18

Once. Not annually. Not monthly. Not renewably. The whole letter is built around that word and the writer of Hebrews leans on it so hard he says it four different ways: once for all, one sacrifice for sins forever, not needing to offer daily, entering the holy place once and obtaining eternal redemption.

The reason those men would not stop saying it is that they knew exactly what a person does with a mercy he suspects is on a renewal cycle. He starts driving.

You are covered by something that happened once, and there is no renewal date anywhere in it. Scripture says Christ suffered once for sins, the just for the unjust, and it is the Holy Spirit, not the strength of that word, who makes once feel like once in a man who has been driving on the first Saturday for eleven years.

And notice the second half of the verse, because it is the part that gets read past. He suffered once for sins, the just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God. Bring. He carried you in. You did not walk yourself in on approval and you are not being kept there on good behavior, and the yard has never been part of the arrangement.

You have been brought to God by somebody who carried you the whole distance, and you were never admitted on a trial basis. It is written that He suffered to bring us to God, and His Spirit is the one who is at this moment telling a man in a truck cab that he arrived a long time ago.

The Work Is Good. The Sentence Is Not.

Now hear the thing I am not saying, because a man in this position can take one sentence out of context and mow twice as much next month to make up for having considered it.

I am not saying the churchyard does not matter. It matters. Those stones are somebody's people, the two women with the flowers are glad every single month, and eleven years of that is a genuine and beautiful thing that God sees and does not despise. Do not let anybody take that off you.

What has to come off is the sentence underneath it.

Because there are two entirely different men who could be driving that highway at ten of five. One of them is going because he loves that little place and those people and the smell of cut grass in June. The other one is serving time. From the outside the trucks look identical. The mower is the same, the hedge gets cut the same, and only one of the two lies in the dark with a fever doing arithmetic and feeling a door close.

You are free to keep every good thing you do and to stop paying for it at the same time, and Scripture nowhere asks you to choose between those. The word says we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, and it is the Holy Spirit who turns a work being served under into a work being done freely.

And here is what has never yet been said out loud in that truck, so let me say it plainly on your behalf and you can hear how it sounds outside your own head. You believe that if you missed a month, something would be withdrawn. That is the sentence you cannot finish. And it is not true, and the reason you have never said it out loud is that some part of you already knows it would not survive being said in daylight.

You have not been placed on a payment arrangement, and nothing in your life is holding up a mercy that was settled without you. He promised in His word that He will never leave us nor forsake us, and it is the same Spirit who bears witness with our spirit that we are His children, which is not a status anybody renews on the first Saturday.

The breakthrough

So here is the turn, and it is going to feel like standing on a floor that has not been there before.

The debt is not partly paid. It is not mostly paid with a small remainder that a hundred miles a month has been quietly servicing. It was paid once, in full, by Christ, before you were born, and the astonishing and slightly offensive truth is that eleven years of first Saturdays added nothing to it at all. Not because your years were worthless. Because there was nothing left to add them to.

You have been trying to contribute to a finished work. That is the whole of it. And a man cannot contribute to a finished work no matter how early he gets up, which means the exhaustion you have been carrying was never obedience. It was arithmetic that would not come out.

You are standing on a finished work, and there is no unpaid balance anywhere with your name against it. Scripture says that when He had offered one sacrifice for sins forever, He sat down, and it is the Holy Spirit who explains to a man why the sitting down is the most important detail in that sentence.

And the record stands. I want to be honest with you the way nobody in that county has ever been able to be, because they do not know. What happened eleven years ago happened. Nobody here is going to tell you it did not, or that it was smaller than it was, or that the years since have paid it down. The record stands and the verdict is changed, and the verdict was changed by Christ and not by mowing.

You are free of a sentence nobody but you was still enforcing, and the court that mattered closed the case before you ever bought the mower. It is written that there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, and it is the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus who is the one setting a man free from a law he wrote himself.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, standing if you can. The authority in them is not yours by nature and it is not mine; it is Christ's, delegated, and it is yours in Christ because He bought you and put it in writing. He may answer in His own way and in His own timing, and the outcome is His to decide and not ours. We are not making anything happen here. We are saying out loud what has already been settled.

  1. Hundred miles on the first Saturday, you are not my sentence. Christ suffered once for sins, the just for the unjust, and once does not come back around again every thirty days. I am driving that road as a free man from here on.
  2. Dread of the month I do not go, get out of this truck. I am a man Christ carried in once and for all, not a man renewing something every thirty days at four twenty in the morning. In the name of Jesus, I am finished making it up to anybody.
  3. Lord Jesus, You suffered once for sins and You brought me to God Yourself, and You have never once asked me for a second delivery. Your word says the just for the unjust, and Your Spirit is the one who keeps that from turning into something I owe. I am going back to that churchyard because I love it, and never again to serve time.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
