His Father's Knife

He is at the jetty by ten to six, the way he is most Saturdays, with a flask and no rod and no reason.

The tide is up and the water is doing that early thing where it looks solid. Two boats are already out past the mark and a third is warming up at the end of the pontoon, and the man on her lifts a hand to him because everybody down here lifts a hand to everybody. He lifts one back. He walks to the end of the boards, and he stands there for about forty minutes, and then he drives home.

He has been doing that for a while now. Long enough that nobody asks him anymore when he is going out. They asked for the first year or so.

His father's knife had a handle worn into the shape of a particular hand that was not his. Beech scales gone dark, a steel bolster you could see the hammer marks in, and a blade that decades of sharpening had taken down thin and slightly hollow along the spine, so it looked like a smaller knife than it had been. There was a nick cut into the scale near the butt. His father put it there on purpose, one evening, so it could be told apart in a bucket of other men's tools. His father was that kind of practical.

He gave it away.

Not for anything. There was a thing between his family and another family that had run on for years, the kind that starts before you are born and gets handed down like a coat, and there came an evening where the whole thing could be ended and everybody knew what it would take, and what it would take was that. So he wrapped it in a cloth and drove out and put it into another man's hand and said something short, and that was the end of it, and it has stayed ended.

He does not regret it. Ask him and he will tell you flatly he would do it again tomorrow. What he would not have believed, standing in that doorway with his keys in his other hand, is that he was also handing over the water.

Because that is what happened. Not by anybody's decision. There was simply no morning after that when going out felt like a thing he was entitled to do, and no way to say why, and no way to explain it to a wife who asked twice and then stopped. So he goes down to the jetty and stands on it, which is the closest thing left, and he tells himself the flask is the point.

You know that jetty. I am not going to ask you what yours was, and I am not going to guess at it, and I am not going to put a list of possibilities in front of you to see which one you flinch at. That is not what this is. What I know is that a great many people are carrying a version of this: a thing handed over years ago, for a reason that was a real reason, and a second thing that went with it that nobody warned you about and that you have never once said out loud, because it sounds absurd to mourn a Saturday morning.

What a redeemer actually goes looking for

To redeem is to buy back. Somebody near enough to have the right paid what was owed and took the person home. That is the whole word and it is a plain one, and this is what it looks like when God does it.

And they shall be called The Holy People, The Redeemed of the Lord; and you shall be called Sought Out, A City Not Forsaken.Isaiah 62:12

Two names in one verse, and the second one is the one I want you to hold. Sought Out. Not tolerated, not noticed, not left on a list somewhere. Sought out, which is what you call a thing that somebody went looking for on purpose, with an address, because they intended to have it back.

You are sought out, and the looking started long before you were ready to be found. That is not my warmth talking. Isaiah 62:12 gives the redeemed that name in the Lord's own mouth, and it is the Holy Spirit who takes a name written over a ruined city and lays it over a man standing on wet boards at ten to six with a flask he does not want.

And notice that redemption in Scripture is never general. It is always about a particular thing that went out of a particular person's hands. The law of Israel is full of it: a field, a house, a man's own freedom, each one bought back by name, by a kinsman with the right to do it. God does not run an amnesty. He runs a search.

You have a Redeemer who works by name, and He did not need an inventory from you. The word says the Lord seeks out His people, and the Holy Spirit is the one who knows precisely what went out of your hands and what quietly went with it, which is the part you have never managed to say to anybody.

What went with it

Now hear the thing this site is careful about, because it matters more than anything else I could tell you this morning.

Some of you did not hand anything over freely at all. You were leaned on, worn down, frightened, kept short of the truth, or young enough that nobody should have been asking. A signature that was pushed is not a signature. A yes given by somebody with no room left to say no is not a yes, and God has never once treated it as one, and He is not waiting for you to prove which kind yours was before He acts.

And some of you did choose it, with your eyes open, for a reason that was a real reason, the way this man chose it. That is not a lesser case. He is not being asked to feel bad about ending a quarrel that had eaten two families for a generation. Nobody here is going to tell him the knife was a mistake or hand him a lesson about it.

Here is what is actually true, and both halves are true at once. The record stands and the verdict is changed. He gave it away. That happened, it is not being edited, and the knife is in another man's drawer this morning and I am not going to promise you it comes back, because I do not know and neither does anybody else who is honest.

You are not the transaction, and you never were. Scripture calls the redeemed Sought Out and a city not forsaken, both names given after the ruin and not instead of it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps a man from confusing what left his hands with who he is.

So the one specific thing being bought back this morning is not the knife. It is the water. The mornings. The going out, the cold hands, the thing you loved that walked out of your life on the back of a decision you would still make. That is what a Redeemer goes after, and He goes after it by name.

You have the water back, and it was never the price of anything. His word never once records a redeemed person being charged for what was restored to them, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes a truth like that off a page and puts it in a hand that has not held a rope in years.
