The Bag Under the Desk

This message is for I have kept my things in a bag under my desk for eleven years instead of in the drawer, because the contract rolls and somebody decides again every March, and I have lived with God the same way, packed and ready to be let go at short notice.

The lift doors close on the last of them at ten past six and the floor goes quiet in that particular way an office goes quiet. The printer still warm. One monitor left glowing on somebody's half finished spreadsheet. The building humming to itself the way buildings do when the people have gone.

She stays a minute. Not because of the work. The work is done.

Under her desk there is a bag. Canvas, navy, the handles gone soft and pale where her hand has held them. In it: a mug with a chip out of the rim, a cardigan for when they turn the air conditioning up too high in July, a phone charger, a small framed photograph laid face down so the glass does not scratch, a tin of the tea she likes that nobody else in the building drinks, a spare pair of flat shoes. Everything she owns in this place fits into it. It has fitted into it for eleven years.

The drawer beside her knee is empty. It has been empty since the week she started. There is a woman two rows over who keeps birthday cards in hers going back four years, and a hairbrush, and a plant that has no business surviving in a drawer and survives anyway. She has looked at that drawer the way you look at something in a shop window on a street you do not live on.

Eleven years. Rolling contract. Renewed every twelve months, signed in March, always signed, never once not signed. She has trained three people who are permanent now. She has a lanyard with her own face on it, and a chair that facilities adjusted for her back, and a mug in the staff cupboard that she never uses, because the mug in the bag is the one she trusts. And a bag. Packed. Under the desk. Because a rolling contract is a sentence with a comma in it, and eleven years in, she has still never once let herself hear a full stop.

She reaches down without thinking and checks the handles are where the handles are.

That is the tell. Not the fear. The checking. Eleven years of a hand going down at ten past six to make sure the way out is still where she left it.

She switches off the lamp and picks the bag up and carries it home again, because leaving it in the drawer overnight would be a claim, and she has never in her life made a claim about anything.

You know the shape of this, and it has nothing to do with an office.

There is a place in your life where you have never unpacked. Where you have kept it light and kept it ready and told yourself that is only being sensible, and where the truth sitting underneath the sensible is that you have lived as somebody here on approval. Renewable. Reviewable. Good while it lasts. Careful never to take up more room than you might have to give back.

And somewhere along the way you started doing it with God too. Grateful. Careful. Packed.

Nobody Buys A Thing They Mean To Hand Back

Eleven years is a long time to sleep with your shoes on, and the reason a person does it is almost never cowardice. It is arithmetic. A rolling arrangement gets renewed by somebody else's decision, and the decision is made again on a date you did not choose, and a soul that has lived inside that long enough stops being able to picture any other kind of belonging. So it keeps things light. That is a reasonable habit in an office. It is a quiet catastrophe in a life.

You were bought outright, and you were never taken on approval. I am not laying my own idea over your evening. Scripture says you are not your own and that you were bought at a price, and it is the Holy Spirit, not the force of a sentence, who carries that off a page and into an office at ten past six with a canvas bag on the floor.

You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.1 Corinthians 6:20

Read the first half slowly, because the first half is where the relief lives and most of us race past it to get to the instruction. You are not your own. That reads at first like a loss of freedom. It is the opposite. It means the question of whether you get to stay is not yours to lie awake over, because it is not yours to decide, because you are not the one holding the arrangement. Somebody else is holding it. Somebody who has never once been in two minds.

There are two kinds of document in the world and everything depends on which one a person is living under. One of them says how long. It has a date in it, and the date arrives, and somebody sits down and decides. The other kind has no how long line anywhere in it, because how long was never a question anybody was asking. What Scripture describes over your life is the second kind. Finished. Past tense. Done before you knew about it.

You are His outright, and there is no renewal date written anywhere in it. His word says the buying is accomplished rather than pending, and the Spirit is the one who makes that land in a person as rest instead of as information.

What The Buying Says About The Buyer

Here is the thing that changes the temperature in the room. Being bought tells you almost nothing about you and almost everything about the one who did it. Underneath eleven years of a packed bag sits a quiet assumption that if He knew the whole of it He would have kept His options open, the way a sensible employer keeps a contract rolling. He did not keep His options open. He read the whole file first, and then He acted, and He has not gone back to it since.

That matters more than any encouragement I could hand you, because it lets the honest thing and the good thing into the room at the same time. Your history is not deleted. Every renewal you ever signed with your stomach in a knot is still exactly where it happened. The record stands. What has changed is the verdict on whether you belong here, and the verdict was passed by the only one with the standing to pass it.

You have been chosen by somebody who read the whole file before He decided. It is written that while we were still a long way from presentable He moved anyway, and the Holy Spirit is the one who turns that from a doctrine you agree with into a knot coming loose behind your ribs.

So the checking can stop. Not the caring, not the diligence, not the good work you do at that desk. The checking. The hand going down to the handles at ten past six. That habit was built to protect you from a decision that is not being made about you any more.

You are not being tolerated in a house you were bought to live in. Scripture calls you His own possession, chosen and dear rather than kept on, and it is the Spirit who says so in the exact hour the lift doors close and the floor goes quiet.

The breakthrough

Nothing here asks you to feel differently first. Feelings are the last part of a person to get the news and they always have been.

What is happening is simpler and a good deal better than that. The one who bought you is saying, plainly, tonight, that the arrangement you have been bracing against does not exist. There is no March. There is no review. There is nobody upstairs weighing whether to keep you on for another year.

You have been settled by God, and the settling did not wait for you to be sure of it. It is written that nothing separates you from His love, and it is the same Spirit who bears witness with your own spirit that the word is talking about you and not about somebody more deserving.

You contribute nothing to this. Not a single thing. Not by working harder at that desk, not by being easy to keep, not by never asking for anything, not by being the last one out. Those things may be good and they are not part of the arrangement, because the arrangement was finished before you arrived and it was never open for contributions.

You are free to unpack, and the freedom is not a risk you are taking. His word calls this a hope that does not disappoint, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes it safe enough to act on rather than only true enough to agree with.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Bag under the desk, you are not a warning and you are not my future. Scripture says I was bought at a price, and a buying is not a renewal signed every March. The drawer is mine and I am filling it tonight.
  2. Idea that I am kept on and not wanted, you have no standing in me. In the name of Jesus I put you out, because the One who bought me read the whole file first and has never once gone back to it. I am wanted, and it was settled where I could not reach in and spoil it.
  3. Jesus, You paid outright and You have never asked me to make it up to You. You are the One I belong to, and I am saying so out loud tonight with my hand flat on an open drawer.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
