Every Week, Without Fail

This message is for the man who does something for a brother he wronged every single week without fail and cannot stop, because stopping would mean admitting it was never his to pay

He starts it on Saturday night, which nobody knows, because the browning takes an hour if you do it properly and he does it properly.

Sunday morning it goes into the blue dish with the cracked lid, the one that has been through a dishwasher four hundred times and has gone the color of weak tea around the rim. Foil over the top. A dish towel over the foil, because the drive is thirty-five minutes and he does not like it arriving cool.

Then the car. Same route. He could do it with his eyes shut and some Sundays he practically does, out past the strip mall, left at the church with the ugly addition, up the hill where the road narrows and you have to pull in for the bus.

He parks two doors down. Not outside. Two doors down, so it is less of an event.

Then the step. Three concrete steps up to a green door with a bell that has never worked, so he knocks, twice, and then he goes back down and stands on the path with his hands behind his back like a man waiting for a train.

Sometimes his brother opens it. When he does, they talk about the ball game and the weather and whether the city is ever going to do anything about the hill, and it is warm, and it is easy, and it lasts about six minutes.

Mostly the door opens after he has gone. He knows because the dish comes back, washed, on his own step, the following Saturday, with a dish towel folded on top of it. Which is its own kind of conversation.

Nine years. Every week. Without fail. Through two winters where the hill was impassable and he walked the last half mile. Through a chest infection where he should not have been out of bed and went anyway. Through the week of his daughter's wedding, when he took it up on the Saturday instead, and apologized for the change.

Here is the thing. His brother is not angry. His brother stopped being angry a long time ago and said so, out loud, plainly, on that step, six or seven years back. He said, look, it is finished, we are fine, you do not have to keep doing this.

And he heard it. He heard every word of it. And the following Sunday he was back on the step at ten past twelve with a blue dish and a dish towel.

Because he cannot stop. And he knows the reason, and he has never once said it out loud, so I will say it for him.

If he stops, then it was never his to settle. And if it was never his to settle, then he has to sit down in the middle of what he did with nothing in his hands and nothing to do about it, and he would rather drive up that hill every Sunday for the rest of his life than sit in a chair with empty hands for one afternoon.

I am not going to ask what he did. It is not mine and it is not yours. But you know what I am talking about, because you have got a Sunday too. It might not be a dish. It might be a phone call you make when you do not want to, or a job you take on nobody asked you for, or a way of speaking to somebody that has not been necessary for years. You would recognize it instantly if somebody took it off you, and that is exactly how you know.

Nine years of Sundays, and the account was never in your name

Let me be careful here, because there is a wrong turn at the start of this that ruins the whole message. I am not about to tell you that nine years of cooking for your brother was wasted, or foolish, or that love expressed with your hands is worth nothing. It is worth an enormous amount, and heaven has watched every one of those hills.

What I am going to take off you is not the dish. It is the meaning you have nailed to it.

You are not the one settling this, and you never were the one settling this. That is not me softening the facts. It is written that He was wounded for our transgressions and bruised for our iniquities, and it is the Holy Spirit, not the comfort in my voice, who takes the word "our" in that sentence and puts a man's own name inside it on a Sunday morning with foil in his hand.

Look at where the invitation actually goes.

Come, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters. Come, buy and eat. Come, buy wine and milk without money and without price.Isaiah 55:1

It is a street cry. Somebody is standing in the middle of a market shouting at people to come and take what has been set out, and the one qualification named in the whole verse is thirst.

And then the strange line. Buy, without money and without price. He keeps the verb, because something really is being handed over and taken, and He removes every means by which you might contribute to it. That is deliberate. He wants your hands full of what He is giving and empty of what you were bringing.

You have been invited to a table where your contribution is the one thing not accepted. Scripture says come and take it without price, and the same Spirit who inspired that line is the one who makes it a relief rather than an insult to a man who has spent nine years proving something.

Take the payment out, and leave the life in

Here is where people get frightened, and I want to walk it slowly, because I have seen this message land badly and do real damage.

Somebody hears "you owe nothing" and hears "so all of it was pointless." Then they stop the dish, and they stop the call, and six months later there is a coldness between two brothers that nobody wanted, and they call that freedom. It is not freedom. It is a house cleared out by somebody who could not tell the furniture from the debt.

The dish was never the problem. The dish was beautiful. What has to come out is the invoice you stapled to the underside of it.

You are free to keep every good thing you have been doing, once it stops being a payment. His word says we love because He first loved us, and the Holy Spirit is the one who moves an act from the column of what a man owes into the column of what a man is glad to do, without changing a single thing about the act itself.

Test it like this. Ask what happens inside you if you miss a week. If missing a week produces guilt, dread, and the immediate need to make it up, that is not love running. That is an obligation running, and obligations do not know how to stop, which is why nine years became eleven and eleven will become twenty.

Love can miss a Sunday. Penance cannot. That is the whole difference and it fits in one line.

You are held by a finished work, and your consistency is not what is holding it together. It is written that it is finished, spoken by the only person with standing to say it, and it is the Spirit who keeps that word in the perfect tense in the mind of a man whose hands want a job to do.

And let both halves stand, because this site will not give you one without the other. What you did really happened. Your brother remembers it, you remember it, and nothing in this message tidies it away. The record stands. The verdict is changed. What has moved is not the history. It is who settled it, and He settled it in full and did not leave a share for you.

The breakthrough

Here is the one specific thing I am putting back in your hands, and it is not absolution, because you already have that and it has not helped.

It is the empty afternoon. The chair. The thing you have been driving away from for nine years.

Because that is the real transaction underneath the Sunday. As long as you have something to carry up that hill, you never have to sit in a room with nothing in your hands and let the finished work be finished. The dish is not for your brother. It has not been for your brother in years. It is a way of not being still in front of God with your hands open, which is the one posture the invitation actually asks for.

You are being handed the rest that your Sundays have been keeping you out of. His word says there remains a rest for the people of God, and he who has entered that rest has ceased from his own works, and it is the Holy Spirit, not your resolve, who gets a man to sit down in it.

Come and take it without money and without price. Thirst is the qualification. That is all it says. Not proof of change, not a track record, not nine years without a missed week.

You have been paid for in full, and there was never a portion left for you to carry. It is written that in Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace, and the Spirit is the one who makes "according to His grace" mean that no part of this ever depended on the browning being done properly.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, wherever you are sitting. The authority in them is not yours by nature. It is His, delegated to you in Christ, and the outcome is His too, however He answers.

  1. Dish on that front step, you are not a payment and you never were. Scripture says come and take it without money and without price, and Jesus settled this before I ever started driving across town. The record stands and the verdict is changed.
  2. Fear that I am only what I did, you are put out of my car and out of my Sundays. The Lord calls me His own and He is not keeping a tally on me, so in the name of Jesus I am finished working off what is already settled.
  3. Lord Jesus, You paid it in full and You have never once asked me for a share of it. Your word says come and take it without price, and Your Spirit is the one who gets my hands to open. I am back in that kitchen because I love my brother, and not because it is owed.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
