The Oven He Signed Over

This message is for the man who signed his family's bread oven over in a hard season and has walked past the shop that has it in the window for years without looking in

There are eleven doorways on this street between the corner and the steps, and he could tell you all eleven in order with his eyes shut, because for nine years he has walked it on the other side.

It is dusk. The shutters are coming half down. The lamps over the doorways are going on one at a time the way they always do, out of order, whoever remembers first. There is the man with the leather. There is the woman who mends chairs and has never once been seen sitting on one. There is the boy from the spice place putting the sacks back inside, and the smell of the street changes at that exact moment every evening, from cumin to dust.

And there is the fourth doorway from the steps, and he does not look at the fourth doorway from the steps.

In the window of it, on its iron frame, on four small wheels with one of them still bent from the day it went down the steps too fast in his grandmother's time, is his family's bread oven.

The clay dome. The little iron door with the two dents in it. The lip where somebody, four generations back, pressed a thumb into the wet clay and the thumb is still there, and every child in his family has put their own thumb in it at some point to see if it fits.

He signed it over in a hard season. He knows the exact evening he did it and he knows what was going on and it is his and he has never told the whole of it to anybody. That is where the account stops, because that is where it stops being anybody's business but his and God's.

Since then: this side of the street. Nine years of it. He can do the whole walk without breaking step, and he has a way of turning his head at the third doorway that looks entirely natural.

Tonight the old man from the fourth doorway is standing outside it, in his apron, with his arms folded, the way old men stand when they have decided something.

And he says his name.

Not loudly. Just his name, across a narrow street, in the exact tone you would use for somebody you saw yesterday.

So he stops. And he comes across. And for the first time in nine years he is standing in front of the window looking straight into it, at the dome and the dents and the thumbprint, in the lamplight, at the height of his own chest.

The old man says: my father took this in. My father is dead now, and I have been keeping it in the window, and you may have wondered why, in the window, on this street, where you walk. He shrugs. It was so you would always know where it was.

He says: it was never ours. He left an instruction about it and I have kept the instruction for eleven years, and the instruction was that this goes back to your family when one of you comes for it.

And he takes a small key out of his apron and holds it out, and says, come on, before the bread rush, we will need four of us to get it over the step.

You know that street. There is something you handed over, a long time ago, in a season nobody else was standing in with you. I am not going to ask what it was. I am not going to guess at it, or list the things it might have been, or tell you what it probably taught you. You have arranged your whole route around it for years, and you are better at that than anybody knows, and you have never once said out loud that you want it back.

The year does the work

I keep doors, arrivals and departures, and I have learned to spot the walk. A man who has arranged a route around one doorway walks differently on that street, and he thinks nobody can see it, and everybody can.

So let me put in front of you the strangest law in the whole of Scripture, and let me tell you what it does not contain.

In this year of jubilee each of you shall return to his own possession.Leviticus 25:13

There is no hearing in that verse. There is no assessment of how the thing left your hands, no ranking of good reasons over bad ones, and no requirement that you explain the hard season to anybody at the gate. The year comes. The horn sounds. Things go back to the families they belong to, and the whole street rearranges itself around a date rather than around a case.

You are living inside a year that has already been declared, and no one is going to interview you about the evening you signed. That is not my generosity laid over your street. Scripture says Christ has proclaimed liberty to the captives and the acceptable year of the Lord, and it is the Holy Spirit who takes a proclamation made in a small synagogue and stands it in front of a lit window nine years down a road.

And notice who does the work in that law. Not the man who lost the thing. The year does it, and behind the year, the one who declared it. There is no version of jubilee where the man on the other side of the street earns his way back across.

You have something being bought back for you by somebody with the right to do it, and you are not a contributor to it in any form. It is written that you were redeemed not with things that perish, and the Spirit is the one who makes that land as relief rather than as doctrine in a man who has been paying quietly for nine years.

About the signature

Now I have to say something before we go any further, because for some of you the whole message turns on it.

I have written this as though you signed. Some of you did, freely, in a hard season, knowing what you were doing, and you have carried it alone since. That is real and it is yours and this message is for you and there is no sentence coming.

But some of you did not sign. Some of you were leaned on. Some of you were worn down over months by somebody who had power over you and knew how to use it, or were young enough that the whole thing was arranged around you before you understood the shape of it, or were so tired and so alone that the word choice does not honestly apply.

Hear this plainly. A pushed signature is not a signature. What was taken from you under pressure was taken, whatever your name looks like at the bottom of it, and nobody here is going to hand you a guilt that belongs to another person. If that is you, everything in this message still stands, and the part about your own choosing simply is not addressed to you.

You are not being sorted into a category before you can receive this, and nothing here asks you to establish how it happened. Scripture says He knows our frame and remembers that we are dust, and the Holy Spirit is not a Spirit who requires a statement from a person before He acts on their behalf.

And whichever it was, the record stands. The evening happened. Nine years of walking on the other side of the street happened, and no message worth reading is going to tell you those years were a misunderstanding.

You are standing under a verdict that has been changed while every fact of the history stays where it is. His word never tidies a life away, it changes what is spoken over it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets a man look straight into a window he has avoided for nine years and not be destroyed by it.

The breakthrough

The one thing being bought back tonight is not a category and it is not redemption in general. It is the specific thing, the one you thought of in the third paragraph, that you have not named out loud since the season it left.

You are being handed the thing itself, and this is not a kindness offered in its place to keep you quiet. Scripture says He restores, and it is the Holy Spirit who keeps a specific thing specific instead of letting it dissolve into a general comfort that costs nobody anything.

And here is what has actually been happening on that street.

It was in the window. Not in a back room, not in a cellar, not gone. In the window, lit, at chest height, on the road you walk every single day. You read that as the worst possible place for it to be, and it was chosen deliberately, and it was chosen so that you would never for one day have to wonder where it was.

You have been kept in sight the whole time you were keeping to the other side of the street. It is written that He is not far from any one of us, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a nine year walk stop mid step at the sound of a man saying your name.

What He gives back, and in what form, and on what evening, is His to decide, and He may hand it over in a shape you would not have drawn, and that is never a sign the year was not declared. If tonight what you are carrying is heavier than an old regret, tell one real person before you sleep and let them sit in it with you. The instruction the old man kept for eleven years was not waiting on your courage.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud where you can hear your own voice. The standing to say them is not something you recovered by good behavior; it is yours in Christ, and an ambassador speaks with the weight of the King who sent him and never with his own. Scripture is the instruction that was kept and the Holy Spirit is the one who puts the key in your hand. Speak to the window first, then to the fear about what kind of man you are, then to God. Whatever He restores and however He does it is His to decide, however He answers, and the year has already been declared.

  1. Window I have not looked into for years, you are not a place I cross the street to avoid anymore. God says that in the year of jubilee each man returns to his own possession, and He has never once asked me how it left my hands.
  2. Fear that I am a man who gives things away, you have no claim on me and no evening left to run. Scripture says that where the Spirit of the Lord is there is freedom, and the Holy Spirit is the one who walked me back across this street, and I say that to you in the name of Jesus.
  3. Lord, You kept it in the window so that I would always know where it was, and I am naming it to You tonight and taking it back with both hands. Your word says every man returns to his own possession, and Your Spirit is the one who put the key into my palm.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
