The cinder path crunches under both of them and somebody at the far end is burning leaves, and the smell of it goes straight through him the way a smell does when it belongs to a life you used to have.
Saturday morning on the allotments. Sheds with their doors propped, a wheelbarrow across the path that everybody steps round, the communal hut with the kettle going and three old men outside it arguing about slugs. His daughter has him by the elbow, which she has not done since she was small, and she is walking him past the plots the way you walk somebody past a thing you do not want them to look at yet. Twelve. Fourteen. Sixteen. He knows the numbers on the little posts because he knew them once. His father had nineteen. Then he had nineteen. Then, in a year he does not talk about, he signed the tenancy back to the committee, because he could not keep it and could not bear to watch it go to weed, and he has walked past the gate on the way to the bus for ten years without turning his head.
She stops at the gate. The bean poles are up. Somebody has dug it over. And she takes a small brass key out of her coat pocket, the shed key, the one that used to live on his own ring, and puts it in his hand and closes his fingers over it.
"They gave it to me. I put my name down. It came up." She is trying not to cry and doing badly. "I can't do it on my own, Dad. It's yours."
He did not reclaim it. He could not have. His name had been off the list for a decade and the waiting list was long and the committee did not know him any more. Somebody with the right to put her name down did, and waited, and when the plot came up she went and got it and walked him down the path and handed him the key. The men outside the hut have gone quiet, watching, and one of them lifts his mug.
And you know that gate. Not an allotment; something else. You gave something of yourself away a long time ago, and you have never got it back, and you have walked past the place where it used to be for years without turning your head. Whatever it was, and I am not going to ask, and I am not going to guess, it was yours, and it went, and you have not known how to get it back because you were the one who signed.
The one who sold it is not the one who buys it back
Let me say first what this room is not going to do. It is not going to ask what you gave away, and it is not going to guess. I have sat with enough people to know that the thing is different in every hand and the same in every face, and that the moment somebody names it for you it stops being yours to say. So it stays yours. Say it to God, later, once, and to nobody else if that is what you need. This page is not for the thing. It is for the buying back.
And I want to say one more thing before we open the Book, because some of you need it said out loud. If what you gave was pushed out of your hands, if you were young, or frightened, or lied to, or worn down until yes was the only word left, then you did not trade. You are bought back on exactly the same terms as anybody else, and you were never once entered in God's record as a seller. Scripture never calls a person like that a seller, and the shame that has been living in your house is not yours and never was, because the Holy Spirit does not read a coerced signature as a signature.
Now the law God gave His people about a thing that was sold in a hard year.
If your brother becomes poor and sells part of his property, then his nearest redeemer shall come and redeem what his brother has sold.Leviticus 25:25
Read the grammar of it, because the grammar is the gospel. If your brother becomes poor and sells. God assumes it. He does not write a law for people who never had a bad year. He writes one for the man at the gate of plot nineteen. And then: his nearest redeemer shall come. Not the seller. The seller has already shown he cannot hold it. Somebody near, with the right by blood to act, comes and buys back what was sold, and the field goes back to the family it belonged to. That person is the kinsman-redeemer, the one near enough to have the right, and the word Scripture uses for what he does is the word this whole site is built on. He redeems. He buys back.
You have a nearest redeemer, and it is not you. Hear that as gently as it is meant, because it is the whole relief. Scripture says Christ shared in flesh and blood so that He would be near enough (Hebrews 2:14), and He said of Himself that He came to give His life as a ransom (Mark 10:45), and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes a law about fields and makes it true about the one thing you signed away. He has the right. He was willing. And the buying back was never yours to do.
The record stands and the thing comes home
Notice what the law does not do. It does not tear up the deed of sale. The field remembers it was sold; the years are counted; the whole thing is written down and nobody pretends the bad year did not happen. And then the field goes back anyway. That is what redemption is, and this site will never tell you anything softer: the record stands, and the verdict is changed. You did sign. He did buy it back. Both are true, and the second one is the one that owns the plot.
You are carrying a record that still says what happened, and you were given a verdict that no longer matches it. That is written into the law itself in Leviticus 25:25, where the deed of sale is kept and the field goes home anyway, and the Holy Spirit lets a person hold both facts at once without either collapsing.
So the years you have spent walking past the gate without turning your head were not you being faithful; they were you carrying a debt that somebody else had already settled. And I do not mean the kind you could pay. Nothing on this page has a price in it that a person could put a hand to, because the price was His life and you were never asked to contribute anything to it. You have been bought back, and the walking home comes after the buying and never before it. It is written that the LORD says return to me, for I have redeemed you (Isaiah 44:22), and read the order of that sentence: the redeeming comes first and the returning comes second, and the Holy Spirit is the one who turns you round on the path. You do not walk back to earn the plot. You walk back because it is yours again.
What is yours again
Here is what I most want to hand you, so hold out your hand. Whatever it was that you gave, it is yours again. Not a copy of it. Not a lesser plot further down the path. The thing itself, bought back by the One with the right, and put into your hand by Him the way the daughter put the key into her father's. He did not send him to the committee to plead. He walked him down the path and closed his fingers over it.
You are holding something that was bought back for you, and you were never the one who had to go and get it. Leviticus 25:25 says the nearest redeemer comes, which puts the walking on Him and not on the one who signed, and the Holy Spirit is the one who gets a finished buying off a page and into an actual hand on an actual Saturday.
You did not have to reclaim it yourself. That is the sentence people find hardest to receive, because a person who signed something away feels that getting it back is theirs to do, and the shame of the signing makes them think they must at least walk to the committee alone. But the law says the nearest redeemer comes. Scripture says He came, and He said it is finished, and the Spirit of God is the one who says mine again over what you thought was gone. Your part is to open your hand.
You are free of the walk to the committee, and you were never going to make it anyway. That is what Leviticus 25:25 provided for, and the Holy Spirit takes the shame out of a man's legs so he can stand still and receive.
And a thing bought back is bought back for something. The plot is dug over and the bean poles are up. What you receive today is not a relic to keep in a drawer; it is yours to live in. That is another article on this site, and it is enough for now to know that the gate is open and your name is back on the post.
Here is what turns in this room. You thought the thing you signed away was gone because you were the one who signed, and that is a rule you made up in a bad year, and God never made it. His law was written for exactly the person who signed. It puts a redeemer on the path before the seller has even worked out he cannot get it back. You have been bought back, the way a field is bought back by the brother with the right. The written word says the buying is finished, and the Holy Spirit is the one who walks you down the cinder path and puts the key into your hand.
So the plot is not gone. It was sold, and that is in the record, and it is yours again, and that is the verdict. The one who bought it back did not ask you to help, and He is not asking now. He is asking you to hold out your hand.
Declare this over yourself
Now say these, and say them with your hand closed round what He gave back. You were seated with Christ when He raised you, and that seat is the standing you speak from; you are not a seller pleading at a committee table, you are family, and the Redeemer is your kin. Scripture is the ground under each line and the Holy Spirit is what carries it, not the strength of your grip. The father at plot nineteen did not argue his case; he took the key. Whatever He does with what you hold now, and how quickly it feels like yours, is His timing, and the outcome is His.
- Thing I signed away a long time ago, you were bought back by Somebody with the right to do it, and you are mine again. Scripture says the nearest redeemer comes for what his brother sold, and I did not have to reclaim you myself.
- Belief that I have to win it back myself, you have kept me walking past the gate for years and the plot was never yours to hand out. It is written that Christ shared my flesh and blood so He could be near enough to redeem, and the Holy Spirit is the one putting the key in my hand, and I say so in the name of Jesus.
- Lord, You are my nearest Redeemer, and You bought back what I gave away with the record standing and the verdict Yours. I thank You, because Your Spirit says mine again over it by name, and I am naming it to You now, once, and receiving it back out loud.
