The Language He Cannot Pray In

The radio on the windowsill is on a station he did not choose. It came with the apartment, or with the habit, or with somebody who used to live here, and he has never changed it, and it plays low all day while he does things with his hands.

He is washing a pan. Forty-eight years old, sleeves pushed up, the water too hot the way he likes it. And a woman on the radio finishes whatever she was saying and then says a short phrase, four or five syllables, warm, the kind of thing you say at the end of a sentence rather than the middle.

And his hands stop.

Not because he knows what it means. He does not, exactly. Because something under his ribs recognized the shape of it half a second before the rest of him did, the way you recognize a footstep on a stair.

His grandmother said that. He is almost sure. He can hear the pitch of her voice on it. He cannot tell you the words.

He was eight when he made the decision, and calling it a decision is generous. There was a schoolyard and there was a way certain boys said certain things and there was one afternoon that he still remembers the temperature of, and after that afternoon he answered her in English. That was all. He did not announce anything. He just answered in English, and kept answering in English, and she never once said a word about it.

She switched. That is the part he cannot get past. She was seventy-one and she crossed over to meet him where he had gone, and she stayed there for the next nineteen years, and it must have cost her something and she never once let him see the weight of it.

Except when she prayed. She never prayed in English. Not once. She would put her hand flat on the top of his head, right on the crown, heavy and dry and warm, and she would go, low, fast, in her own language, and he would stand there with his eyes open looking at the pattern on the linoleum and understanding maybe one word in nine.

He never asked her what she was saying. It never occurred to him to ask. It was like asking what the weather is for.

She has been gone eleven years. The pan is still in his hands.

And he tries it. Standing at the sink with the water running, he tries to pray the way she prayed. He gets four words in. Four. And they come out of his mouth with an accent that is not hers and is not his either, and he hears himself, and he stops, and he stands there with his hands in the water feeling like a man who has walked into a house where he used to live and found he does not know which drawer anything is in.

You have got a thing like that. You handed it over so long ago that you were not old enough to know you were handing anything over, and everybody around you was busy, and it went quietly, and nobody has mentioned it since. And you would not know how to begin asking for it back, or from whom, or whether a grown man is even allowed to want it.

An eight year old cannot make a trade

Let me put something down at the front of this, and I want you to hear it as a ruling and not as comfort.

An eight year old in a schoolyard is not a free party to an agreement. He is a small person doing the only survivable thing in front of him. If you were leaned on hard, or worn down over a long time, or made to feel that keeping the thing would cost you the room you had to live in, then what happened to you was not a trade, and it was never a fair one. A pushed signature is not a signature.

You are not being held to a bargain you never freely made. That is not me being generous with the facts. Scripture says the Lord executes righteousness and judgment for all who are oppressed, and it is the Holy Spirit, not the force of my sympathy, who takes a legal word like that and applies it to a boy at a fence in a schoolyard.

Which is why the category this sits in matters. Redemption is not forgiveness with a warm coat on. Forgiveness deals with what you did. Redemption deals with what was taken out of your hands, and it works by somebody with the standing to act going and getting the thing itself.

For then I will restore to the peoples a pure language, that they may all call upon the name of the Lord, to serve Him with one accord.Zephaniah 3:9

Read what God appoints Himself to do there. Not comfort people about language. Restore it. He puts the verb in His own mouth, and the thing He restores is the exact instrument a person uses to call on Him.

You have a Restorer with His hand on the specific thing you lost, and He named the job Himself. It is written that He restores a pure language so that all may call on His name, and the same Spirit who inspired that sentence is the one who keeps it from becoming a poem about unity and lets it stay what it is, which is God going and getting something back.

The Spirit prays in the language you do not have

Here is what usually happens to a man at that sink. He decides the answer is effort. He finds an app, a class, a set of recordings, and he means it, and eight days later the folder is still on his desktop and he feels one degree worse than before, because now he has proof.

Put that down for a minute. I am not against the class. Take the class. But the class is not the redemption, and if it were, the man with no time and no teacher and no living relative who speaks it would be locked out of his own inheritance by circumstances, and that is not how God arranges anything.

You are being prayed for in a language your mouth cannot make. Scripture says the Spirit helps our weakness, because we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered, and the Holy Spirit is not describing a technique there. He is describing what He is doing in you while you stand at a sink with four words.

Sit in that. The distance between what your heart means and what your mouth can produce is exactly the gap He was sent into. It is His territory. It is not a defect in your prayer life. It is the place where the third Person of the Trinity has undertaken to work.

And notice what Zephaniah does not say. It does not say a pure accent. It does not say a fluent people. It says a pure language, given, so that they may call on the name of the Lord. The purpose of the gift is the calling, and the calling is already happening in you every time your hands stop at a sound on the radio.

You are already calling on His name, and the four words counted. His word says whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved, and the Spirit is the one who carries four words in a kitchen with the same weight as nineteen years of a grandmother's hand on a boy's head.

The record stands here too. You did answer in English. That happened and I am not tidying it away. What is changed is the verdict on it, and the verdict is not that you are a man who sold his grandmother's tongue. The verdict is that you are a man with a Redeemer who has gone to get it.
