The grove starts work before the heat does, so by the time the sun is properly up there are already four rows stripped and the baskets are going down to the shade two at a time.
He is back this year.
Nobody made anything of it when he walked in at first light. That is the strange part. He had a sentence ready in his mouth, a good one, worked on for weeks, and the head of the family said his name the way you say the name of somebody who was there yesterday, and handed him a basket, and pointed at the row.
So he is working. And his hands know it. That is the thing that has undone him twice already this morning, that his hands know exactly what to do and have not forgotten a single movement of it, as if the ten years were a door he stepped out of and back into and the room had not been touched.
Except the room has been touched.
The nets are new. Somebody replaced them, and he does not know who, and he cannot ask without the question meaning something. The rope on the long ladder is not the rope he remembers. There is a stone step cut into the bank at the top of the third row that was not there, and it is worn smooth in the middle, which means a lot of feet over a lot of seasons. And the boy on the far side of the row, the one throwing an unripe fruit at his sister and missing, was four the last time he stood here, and is now taller than his mother and works like a man.
Ten harvests. He knows exactly which ten. He knows every one of them by its year and he could tell you what he was doing instead, and he is not going to, because it is his and he has carried it alone and that is how it has stayed.
What he came here for, without admitting it to himself, was the sentence.
He was ready to be told. He was ready for somebody at the end of the day, in the shade with the water jug going round, to say the true thing out loud in front of everybody: we did this without you, and here is what it took, and here is what you are now. He has rehearsed being told. In some way he has come back in order to be told, because being told would at least be over.
And instead it is the middle of the morning, and the head of the family calls across the rows and says his name, and says, the old one at the top, go on, before the sun comes round.
The oldest tree. The one at the top of the terrace with the split trunk that takes two hands and a bit of nerve. The tree that gets given to the man you trust, in front of everybody, and everybody knows it, and the boy who is now taller than his mother stops throwing fruit and watches to see who goes.
You know that grove. You have been doing arithmetic on years, quietly, for a long time. You can name them. You can say what each one held and what it did not, and you have never once said the numbers out loud to another human being. And somewhere under the arithmetic you have been half waiting to be told what they cost, because being told would at least be over.
The sentence that never gets read
I keep doors, arrivals and departures, and the people I meet at a threshold carrying the heaviest bags are almost never carrying what was done to them. They are carrying what they did. There is a particular quiet in a person who is his own prosecutor, and you can hear it in the first sentence he says.
So I am going to do something in this message that may take you a moment to trust. I am not going to ask you what the years held. Not one of them. Not a hint, not a category, not a guess dressed as an example. That is yours, and you have carried it alone, and nothing I say here needs it in order to work.
You are standing in front of a God who is not going to read out what those years cost, and there is no session coming in which He does. That is not my leniency laid over your morning. Scripture says there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, and it is the Holy Spirit, not the softness of my sentence, who takes a line like that off a page and lets a man put a basket down.
And here is what He says instead, which nobody expects.
Instead of your shame there shall be a double portion, and instead of dishonor they shall rejoice in their lot; therefore in their land they shall possess a double portion.Isaiah 61:7
Read what stands where the tally should be. Not a reduced sentence. Not time served. A double portion, given in the place where the shame was, in the same land, in front of the same people. God does not answer wasted years with a discount. He answers them with a portion, and the portion is doubled precisely there.
You have been given a portion in the very ground where you lost the seasons, and it is not a smaller portion because of the ten. His word puts the double exactly where the shame was, and the same Spirit who spoke that through a prophet is the one standing you at the foot of the oldest tree this morning.
Ten years, handed over, with nothing attached
Now let me tell you the hardest part of handing years over, and it is not the handing. It is that we cannot do it without an explanation attached.
We hand them over and then we start talking. We explain the circumstances. We name what we were dealing with. We say what we would do differently, and we volunteer the sentence ourselves because being our own judge feels safer than standing in front of one, and a man who reads out his own verdict has at least kept hold of the pen.
Put the pen down. He is not taking dictation.
You are handing years over to Someone who has already dealt with them and is not asking you to summarize. It is written that He removes our transgressions from us as far as the east is from the west, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that distance real in a chest rather than true in a poem.
And if the years were not freely spent, hear this before you take one step further. If you were worn down, or pushed, or leaned on by somebody with power over you, or too young to understand what you were agreeing to, then a pushed signature is not a signature, and nothing in this message is addressed to you as though it were. Nobody here is going to hand you a guilt that belongs to another person.
Now hold the two halves of the truth together, because this site is worth nothing if it gives you only one.
The record stands. The ten harvests happened and the grove went on without you and the stone step is worn smooth in the middle by feet that were not yours. Nobody is going to pretend that away, and if anybody tries, do not believe them, because a message that has to erase your life to comfort you has told you something false about your life.
And the verdict is changed. Not softened, not deferred, not under review. Changed.
You are living under a changed verdict with your real history intact, and both of those are true in the same grove on the same morning. Scripture never tidies a man's years away, it changes what is spoken over them, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets a person hold an honest memory and a clean verdict in the same hand.
The one thing being bought back this morning is the ten harvests. Not the feeling about them. The years themselves, by their dates, out of your hands and into His, with nothing owed on them and no account rendered.
Here is what actually happened at the top of that terrace. He was not sent up the oldest tree because ten years is a short time or because it did not matter. It mattered. He was sent up because the man who decides who goes up decided, and the deciding was finished before he walked in at first light, and everybody at the ladder found out at the same moment he did.
You have been trusted again, and the trust was settled before you arrived with your sentence in your mouth. It is written that where sin increased, grace abounded all the more, and the same Spirit who wrote that through a man with a violent past is the one calling your name across the rows.
He may do it in a way you would not have designed, and the season may look nothing like the ten you can name, and that is His to decide and never a sign that the portion was not given.
You are standing in the same ground the double was spoken over, and nothing in those ten years moved you off it. Scripture says the gifts and the calling of God are without repentance, and the same Spirit who has held that line steady for three thousand years is the one putting your name in the head of the family's mouth this morning.
If what you are carrying this morning is heavier than a hard memory, tell one real person today and let them sit in it with you. The double does not wait for you to feel worthy of the tree.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud where you can hear your own voice. The standing to say them is not something you earned back this season; it is yours in Christ, and an ambassador speaks with the weight of the King who sent him and never with his own. Scripture is the ground and the Holy Spirit is the one who sets your feet on it. Speak to the ten first, then to the sentence you have been waiting for, then to God. Whatever He does with this harvest and the ones after it is His to decide, however He answers, and the portion is already given.
- Ten harvests I sat out, you are handed over and you are not mine to carry into this grove anymore. God says that instead of shame there is a double portion, and He has never once read me the tally.
- Sentence I keep expecting, you are not coming, and there is nobody in this grove holding a page with my years on it. Scripture says there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets a man work in daylight again, and I say that to you in the name of Jesus.
- Lord, You took the years out of my hands and You never asked me to explain them, and I am going up the oldest tree this morning because You called my name across the rows. Your word says double for the shame, in the same ground, and Your Spirit is the one who put my hands back on the bark.
