Only Ever the Before

The meeting has emptied and the platform still smells of the flowers somebody will have to take home. Two hundred chairs at slight angles. A microphone stand nudged out of line where she stood. Up in the gallery a man is going along the rows collecting cups, whistling something, badly.

She is putting her notes away. She does not need them anymore, she has not needed them for six years, but she folds them into her bag every time because holding paper gives her hands something to do.

They will say lovely things at the door. They always do. One woman will take both her hands and hold them and say she cried through the whole thing. The pastor's wife will say we needed to hear that. A young man will say, quietly, without looking up, that his sister is in it right now, and she will say the true thing back to him, and she will mean every word, and she will remember his face for weeks.

And then she will drive home, and somewhere around the third set of lights she will notice it again.

Every single one of those people met her tonight for the first time, and every one of them now knows her by the worst nine months of her life.

They know the year. They know what she was doing and who she was doing it with and the night it ended and the thing she said out loud in the hallway. She has told it so many times it comes out smooth now, in the same order, with the same pause before the same sentence. It is all true. She has never once embellished it. She would not.

But here is what has happened to her, quietly, over six years of being asked. She has become a picture. Specifically, she has become the first picture. She is what it looked like before, so that everybody in the room can look at her standing there in her good clothes and be encouraged about the after.

She is thirty-nine. She has a job she is good at and a raised bed of tomatoes doing better than anybody expected and a friend she laughs with until she cannot breathe. None of that is ever in the testimony, because none of that is the useful part.

Somebody introduced her last month as, and this is close to word for word, a woman who was in a very dark place. Present tense, hanging in the air, in a room of four hundred people. She smiled and went up and did it beautifully.

You know this. Maybe you have never stood on a platform in your life. But you know what it is to be loved by people who know you entirely by one chapter. You know what it is to be the illustration in somebody else's point, useful, honored, prayed over, and permanently dated to the worst year you ever had.

Remember is a doing word

There is a sentence in Hebrews that people quote as though it were about God's memory, and it is not about God's memory at all.

For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more.Hebrews 8:12

God does not have gaps. He is not going to be startled one day by something He forgot. In the Scriptures, remembering is almost never a mental event, it is an action: God remembered Noah, and the wind passed over the waters. God remembered Hannah, and there was a child. To remember, in that book, is to move on a thing.

So remember no more does not mean it never happened. It means He will never again act on it. The file is not deleted. The file is closed, by the only person with the standing to close it, and He is not going to open it against you, and neither is anybody else, because nobody else was ever holding the pen.

You are standing in front of a God who has closed your case and will not act on it again. It is written that He remembers our sins no more, and it is the Holy Spirit, not a good mood, who takes a sentence about a covenant and lays it over nine months you can still describe in order.

Now hear the other half, because in this house we never say one without the other. The record stands. It happened. You are not being asked to say it did not, to reframe it, to find the silver lining in it, or to become vague about it in order to be at peace. You remember it accurately and that is not unbelief, that is honesty, and God has never once required you to lie about your own life as the price of walking free.

The record stands. The verdict is changed. Both of those, in the same breath, every time.

You have a history that is real and a verdict that is settled, and neither one cancels the other. Scripture says He has blotted out our transgressions for His own sake, and the same Spirit who searches the deep things of God is the one who can hold a true memory and a finished verdict in you at the same time without either of them shaking.

A useful story is not the same as a standing

Here is the tender part, and I am going to say it plainly because nobody else in that building is going to.

The church that loves your story can accidentally keep you in the year it happened. Not from malice. From gratitude. That story does real work: it goes into a room and finds the one girl in the fourth row whose sister is in it right now, and that is holy, and I would not take it off you for anything.

But being useful as an illustration and being seen as a woman are two different things, and one of them can quietly stand in for the other for six years.

You are a whole person today, and the part of you that is useful in a meeting is not the measure of you. His word says we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, and the Holy Spirit is the one who insists on the word created, present and ongoing, over a woman who has been introduced as a dark place.

Nobody ever asks about the tomatoes. Nobody ever asks who makes you laugh until you cannot breathe. The introduction has a job to do and your current life does not help it do that job, so your current life stays in the car.

You are not a visual aid, and you were never bought in order to be one. It is written that you are called by His name and that He formed you for Himself, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes the phrase for Himself and lays it against every introduction that has ever dated you.

And I will say this too, gently. If you are tired of telling it, that is not backsliding. There is nothing in the written word that requires a woman to hand her worst year to a new room every month in order to stay grateful. You may go on telling it. You may tell it for another thirty years and it will still do its work. But do it as a woman with a today, not as an exhibit maintaining her own display.
