The plates are pushed back and the cloth has a ring of coffee on it that somebody keeps putting their cup back down onto, exactly, without looking. It is the good part of the afternoon. Everyone has eaten too much and nobody has left yet and the talk has gone loose and easy the way it only does after four hours.
The uncle is doing the story about the old house and the water tank, which everybody has heard about ninety times and which is funnier every year because he adds a detail. The kids have gotten down from the table and are running a game in the hallway with the door open. Somebody is pouring more coffee that nobody asked for.
And then the uncle, warm and going well, says, "and that was the year we all," and he stops.
It is nothing. Half a second. A man reaching for a date and choosing another one. He says, "no, no, it was the summer after," and he goes on, and the story lands, and the table laughs.
Nobody looks at him. That is the part. Nobody looks at him, and that is how he knows every single person at this table knows exactly which year the uncle nearly said.
He passes the coffee. He laughs at the ending. He is genuinely enjoying himself, and he means it, and underneath he is doing what he always does, which is holding a whole year by himself in a room full of people who are being kind to him at a rate he cannot repay.
Because it is kindness. That is what makes it impossible to raise. There was never a meeting. Nobody ever agreed anything. It happened over a long time, one steered conversation at a time, out of love, by people who decided independently and simultaneously that the best thing they could do for him was leave it alone. And they were probably right. And he cannot breathe in here.
He would give a great deal to hear somebody say it out loud at this table. Not to discuss it. Not to open it. Just to have it exist in the air of the room where they all are, once, so he is not the only one carrying the fact that it happened.
Because it did happen. That is the thing. He is not asking for anybody's opinion about it. He does not want a verdict from this table and he already knows the table is not passing one. He just would like the year to be a year, out loud, in the same room as everybody else's years.
Instead the conversation goes around it the way water goes around a stone, and it has been going around it so long and so smoothly that the shape of the stone is visible in the way the water moves, and everyone can see it, and nobody says it.
You know what that afternoon feels like from the inside. You have got a stone in your own family's conversation. They love you. They swerve. And you sit there with the whole weight of the fact and the whole weight of their kindness, and there is nowhere to put either one.
Silence is a kindness, and a kindness is not a verdict
Take the pressure off your family first, because you have been quietly resenting people who love you and it is making you feel like a monster.
They are not covering it up. They are not ashamed of you. They are doing the only thing their hands know how to do with a thing that hurt somebody they love, which is not touch it. That is not contempt. That is a whole table of people being tender in the only dialect they have.
But it cannot answer your question, and it was never able to, because the thing you are actually waiting for is not silence and it is not sympathy. It is a verdict, and there is exactly one bench in the universe that can hand one down.
You are already holding the verdict that decides this, and it did not come from that table. I am not putting a good feeling over you. Scripture says the man is blessed to whom the Lord does not put iniquity to his account, and it is the Holy Spirit, not the warmth in my sentence, who takes a courtroom word like that and lays it over a Sunday afternoon.
Blessed is the man to whom the Lord does not put iniquity to his account, and in whose spirit there is no deceit.Psalm 32:2
Two halves. Take the first one slowly, because it is a bookkeeping word and that is exactly why it helps.
To put something to somebody's account is to write it in the column that decides what they owe. It does not mean the event is deleted from the world. It means it has been moved out of the column that determines the outcome. The entry is still legible. It simply no longer decides anything.
You have a history that is fully on the record and fully out of the reckoning. It is written that God does not put it to your account, and the same Spirit who inspired that line is the one who stops you hearing it as a polite fiction and lets it land as a legal fact.
That is what this whole site is built on, and it is worth saying flatly, right here, in the middle of a warm afternoon. The record stands. The verdict is changed. Anybody who offers you one without the other is offering you something God did not.
The second half is the one nobody quotes
Look at what the same verse says next. Blessed is the man in whose spirit there is no deceit.
That is not a second, harder condition bolted on to the first. Read the rest of that psalm and you find a man describing what keeping quiet did to him: he says his bones wore out through his groaning all day long. He was not concealing a crime from the authorities. He was managing a silence, and it was eating him.
So the blessing is not only that God keeps no account of it. The blessing is that you get to stop pretending. Those two arrive together, and they have to, because a man who has been declared clear and still has to run a cover story has not been given very much.
You are free of the cover story, and nothing about your standing depends on you maintaining it. His word calls a man blessed in whose spirit there is no deceit, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that read as relief rather than as one more standard to keep.
Notice what this does not require. It does not require you to describe the thing to anybody. It does not require a family meeting, a confession round the table, or a speech at Christmas. Nobody at that table is owed an account of your life, and dragging it into the open to prove your freedom is just the cover story wearing a braver coat.
What it means is much smaller and much bigger. It means the thing can be true in the same room as you, without a swerve, before God, out loud, at least once.
You are allowed to be a man with a history, in the open, in the present tense. Scripture says if we confess our sins He is faithful and just to forgive us and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness, and it is the Spirit, not your nerve, who walks a man to a sentence he has never once completed.
Here is the one specific thing I am putting back in your hands this afternoon, and it is not closure and it is not a conversation with your family.
It is the right to have your history be real and your verdict be settled, at the same time, without one of them canceling the other.
You have been living as though you had to pick. Either the thing is true and you are what it says you are, or you get let off and the year gets folded away with everybody agreeing to look elsewhere. Those are the only two doors that table can offer, and both of them cost you something you should not have to give.
You are standing in front of a third door, and it is the only one God has ever offered anybody. His word says that as far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes that a statement about distance from you rather than a statement about the event never happening.
The stone stays in the riverbed. The water stops going round it, because the water is not what decides anymore. Somebody with the authority to rule on it already ruled, and He did not do it by pretending.
You are cleared, and you did not contribute one thing to the clearing. It is written that in Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace, and the same Spirit who says according to His grace is the one who keeps your hands out of it.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, wherever you are. The authority in them is not yours by nature. It is His, delegated to you in Christ, and the outcome is His too, however He answers.
- Swerve in the conversation, you are not the verdict on me. Scripture says the Lord does not put it to my account, and He never once asked this table to pretend. The record stands and the verdict is changed.
- Idea that I am what we do not mention, you are put out of this room. The Lord calls a man blessed who is carrying no cover story, so in the name of Jesus I am finished being my family's silence.
- Lord Jesus, You do not put it to my account and You never asked anybody to tidy it away. Your word calls a man blessed in whose spirit there is no deceit, and Your Spirit is the one holding me steady while I say the true thing out loud. I am saying it to You today, and I am saying the verdict right after it.
