Nine fifteen on a Tuesday and the kitchen is finished.
The washing is on. The second load is sorted into two piles by the machine. She has wiped down the counter and the front of the fridge and the bit of skirting board by the bin that she noticed last week. There is a shopping list on the back of an envelope and it has four things on it and none of them are urgent. The radio is doing the phone-in.
The window is open because it is one of those bright cold mornings that arrive in the middle of the week and make everything look scrubbed. There is a square of sun on the table moving very slowly toward the fruit bowl.
Two years last month.
Everyone says it like a headline. They put a hand on her arm when they say it. They say she looks well, and she does look well, and she is well. Her sister cried on the phone. Somebody at church put it in a prayer once, kindly, and she did not know where to look.
And here is the thing she has not said to a single living person, including the sister, including anybody in any room she has ever sat in with a paper cup.
Getting free took absolutely everything she had. Every hour was accounted for. There was a plan for the evenings and a plan for Sundays and a number in her phone she could call at any hour and did, twice, at three in the morning. The whole architecture of her life was built around one job and the job was not doing the thing.
She did the job. She is still doing the job, and she is going to keep doing it, and the number is still in her phone.
But the job takes up less room now than it used to, and what has moved into the space is not peace. It is nine fifteen on a Tuesday with the counter wiped and the radio on and absolutely nothing that this morning is for.
She has tried saying it and it comes out sounding monstrous. Two years of people being glad for her, and she is standing in a clean kitchen wondering what the point of her is. It sounds like ingratitude. It is the opposite of ingratitude and she has no idea how to make that clear, so she says nothing, and she puts the kettle on again, and the square of sun reaches the fruit bowl.
You know what this is and it is not about a kitchen.
You got out. Or something got you out. And you can describe in exact detail what you were brought out of, and you have never in your life been asked, or asked yourself, what you were brought out for. There is a space where the fight used to be, and it is a good space, and it is empty, and you are too embarrassed to say that to anybody who was glad for you.
Out Of Is Only Half A Sentence
Nothing about the last two years is being reduced here. What you did was enormous, and it is still going on, and the support you have is not something to be talked out of by anybody, including a message on a screen. Keep the number in your phone. Keep the rooms and the people and whatever care you are under. This is not a message about being past all that.
This is about the other half of a sentence that has only ever been read to you as a first half.
Everything anybody says about redemption gets said in the direction of away. Brought out. Set free. Rescued from. All of it true, all of it yours, and all of it describing a doorway rather than a room.
You were bought for something and not only out of something. I am not decorating your Tuesday. Scripture says we are His handiwork, created in Christ Jesus for good works, and it is the Holy Spirit, not the shape of that sentence, who carries it off a page and into a kitchen with the radio on.
For we are God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.Ephesians 2:10
Read it in the order it is written, because the order is the whole thing. Handiwork first. Made, deliberately, by somebody who was intending something. Then created for good works, which is a purpose clause and not a condition. Then, right at the end, the line nobody quotes: which God prepared in advance.
Prepared in advance. Somebody has already been down here. The morning you are standing in was walked through before you got to it, and things were put in it, and they were put there by the one who made you and knew exactly what He was making.
You are standing in a day that had things put into it before you woke up. His word says He prepared them in advance, and the Spirit is the one who makes prepared read as a promise about this Tuesday rather than as a general encouragement about lives in the abstract.
Prepared In Advance Is Not Something You Owe
Now the trap, and it is the exact trap this whole site exists to close, and it is standing right in front of you at nine fifteen with its arms open.
The moment a person who has been rescued hears the word purpose, they hear owed. They hear: now do something with it. Make it count. Justify the rescue. Be the kind of person the sister's phone call was about. And a life gets built out of that, and it looks devoted and it is exhausting, and underneath it is a person working off something that was never asked of them.
That is not what this is. You are not working anything off, and nothing about your usefulness was ever part of what settled your case. It is written that we are saved by grace through faith and not by works, and then in the very next breath that we are made for works, and it is the Holy Spirit who keeps those two from collapsing into each other in a tired person's head.
Good works are not what settles anything. They are the room you were brought into.
And the record stands. The years that had you are not deleted, and nobody here is pretending the two years took nothing to get. What has changed is the verdict on what you are for, and that verdict was passed by the one who made you, which puts it out of reach of anybody's opinion, including your own at nine fifteen on a bad morning.
You have been made on purpose and for a purpose, and neither of those has to be earned back now. Scripture calls you His handiwork, which is a word about the maker and not a report on the material, and the same Spirit who did the bringing out is the one doing the leading in.
So the emptiness in that kitchen is not what you have been afraid it is.
It is not ingratitude. It is not a sign the freedom did not take. It is not evidence that you are hollow underneath the two years. It is the completely ordinary feeling of a person standing in a doorway they fought like anything to reach, looking into a room they have never been in, and not recognizing anything in it yet.
You are in the room already, and the not recognizing it is not a verdict on you. It is written that He who began a good work in you carries it on to completion, and the Spirit is the one who makes carries on mean present tense, this week, in a kitchen, rather than sometime later when you are more sorted out.
Nothing here asks you to work out your whole purpose this morning. That is the demand that has been making the emptiness unbearable: the sense that a rescued person owes the world a big answer. There is no big answer due. There is a Tuesday with something in it.
And no promise is being made to you about how it looks. Not a calling with a title. Not a story anybody claps for. The good works prepared in advance are mostly small, and they are mostly nearby, and He is not obliged to show you more than the next one.
You have been given today for something, and today is where you get to find out what. His word says His mercies are new every morning and that His faithfulness is great, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes new every morning land on the specific morning you are actually standing in.
Declare this over yourself
- Morning with nothing in it, you are not proof that I am empty. Scripture says I am God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus for good works He prepared in advance, and prepared in advance means somebody has already been down here. I am free, and I am not only free from something.
- Idea that staying clean is all I am, be quiet in me. In the name of Jesus I put down the sense that I owe the world a big answer for being rescued, because good works were never what settled anything and my usefulness was never part of it. I am the maker's handiwork, and that is a word about Him.
- Jesus, You prepared the works in advance and You are not asking me to pay for the rescue with them. You hand out the oar rather than a demand, and I am doing one small thing before eleven this morning and telling nobody.
