He waits until she is asleep. Not because it is a secret exactly, but because it takes a few minutes and it needs quiet, and because after twenty years there is a small embarrassment about it that he has never examined.
The lamp on his side has a fabric shade and it throws a warm oval onto the ceiling. He sits up against the headboard with the covers over his legs. He does not kneel. He tried kneeling for a while in the early years and then stopped, and he has always slightly wondered whether stopping counted against him.
Then he says it.
The words are the same words. He arrived at them in the first month and he has not changed them since, because changing them would mean the previous versions had been wrong, and if the previous versions were wrong then there is a stretch of nights that did not take. So the phrasing is fixed. He knows exactly how long it lasts. He knows the place halfway through where his attention always slips and he has learned to go back to the beginning of that sentence and do it again properly, because a sentence said while thinking about the guttering is not a sentence said.
He is apologizing for the same thing. He has been apologizing for the same thing since 2004.
And he is a good man, and this is where it gets difficult to explain to anybody. He is not tormented. He does not walk around all day in a state. He has been a decent husband and a present father and a man his neighbors would trust with a key, and he does a great deal of quiet good that nobody knows about, and none of that is fake and none of it is grim. He would tell you, honestly, that he believes he is forgiven.
He believes it, and he says it again every night, in case.
In case the first one was not heard, because he was in a bad way that week and he cannot fully remember saying it. In case one of the middle ones did not count, because he was tired. In case the whole arrangement requires keeping up, the way a fire needs feeding, and stopping is the thing that lets it go out.
Twenty years. Something over seven thousand nights. He turns off the lamp and lies down and he is not at peace exactly, but he is up to date, and up to date will do.
You know this from the inside or you would not still be reading. Yours may not be a prayer. It may be a way of being useful that you cannot stop, or a strictness with yourself that everyone else calls high standards, or a habit of taking the difficult end of everything. And underneath it is the same quiet engine, which is that something has to be kept up, and you are the one keeping it up, and you have never quite let yourself ask what would happen if you stopped.
I am not going to ask you what 2004 was. I want to take you to a Friday afternoon outside a city wall, and to the last word a dying man said, and to the tense he said it in.
The last word, and the tense it was in
John records the end with almost no commentary. There is a sponge on hyssop, and a mouth, and then this.
When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.John 19:30
In the language John wrote it in, that whole sentence is one word. And the tense it carries is the one that matters most to a man sitting up against a headboard at half past eleven, because it is not the tense of something that happened and receded into the past. It is the tense of something completed which stands completed. Done, and still done, and going on being done at the moment you read the line.
Which means the question you have been quietly asking every night has an answer, and the answer is older than you are. It was not left partly done, requiring maintenance. It was not done provisionally, pending review. You are standing on something that was finished before you were born and has not needed topping up since. I am not putting a comforting idea over your bedroom. It is written in John 19:30 that He said it is finished, in a tense that means it stands finished, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries a Greek verb form off a page and into a man who has been keeping something up for twenty years.
And notice who spoke it, and when. He said it at the end and not at the beginning. It was not a hope He expressed on the way in. It was a verdict He pronounced on the way out, about work He had personally completed, and the only one with standing to say whether it was enough was the one saying it. You are not the auditor of that work, and you were never appointed to check it nightly. Scripture says that by one offering He has perfected forever those who are being made holy, and the Holy Spirit is the one named in that same passage as bearing witness to us that it is so.
Now hear the thing you already half know and have never been able to make stick. If it is finished, then the seven thousand repetitions were not the thing holding it in place. That is not an accusation. Nobody is going to tell you that you wasted your nights. It is simply that the weight you thought you were carrying was never on your shoulders, and a man can carry an empty crate for twenty years and his back will still ache.
Standing priests and a seated one
There is a detail in the letter to the Hebrews that I have never got over, and it is the whole of this article in one picture.
The writer is describing the old order of priests, and he says that every priest stands daily ministering and offering the same sacrifices repeatedly, which can never take away sins. Stands. Every day. The same thing again. There was nowhere to sit in the sanctuary, because the work was never over, and a chair would have been a lie about the state of the work.
Then he says that this man, after He had offered one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down at the right hand of God.
He sat down. That is the sentence. The posture is the doctrine. You have a Redeemer who is seated, and He did not sit down until there was nothing left standing to be done. It is written in Hebrews 10:12 that He sat down after one offering, and His Spirit is the one who makes a piece of furniture in a letter land on a man sitting up against a headboard at night.
And a few lines further on the writer draws the conclusion out loud, and it is aimed precisely at you: where there is forgiveness of these, there is no more offering for sin. No more. Not a smaller one, not a nightly one, not a maintenance one. The account has been closed by someone with the standing to close it. You have been released from keeping something up that was never yours to keep up. Scripture says there is no more offering for sin where forgiveness has been given, and the Holy Spirit is the one who quiets an engine that has been running under a life since 2004.
Now I want to be careful, because there is a way of hearing this that would rob you, and I am not going to do that. Everything good you have done in these twenty years is not canceled by any of it. The kindness, the being present, the quiet good nobody knows about, all of it stands and God saw every bit of it and none of it evaporates because it turns out you did not owe it. What is being taken off your life is the paying. The life underneath it stays exactly where it is. It was always love. It simply had a second job, and it is being let go of that job tonight.
And the record of 2004 is not being erased either, because that is not what redemption does and you would not trust me if I said it was. Whatever it was, it happened. It stays true. The record stands, and the verdict over it was settled by somebody else and it is not being reopened. Both of those, in the same breath. You have been forgiven completely, and the completeness of it does not depend on your remembering to mention it again. His word says as far as the east is from the west so far has He removed our transgressions from us, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a line about distance land on a man in the dark.
Nothing about 2004 changes tonight. It happened and it is not being tidied and I am not going to ask you what it was or say a word about it. What God does with the ache, and whether the habit lifts in a night or takes a season to come off you, is His to decide and He answers as He answers. I am not putting a date on Him.
But the account is closed and that is what you came here for. You are forgiven at full strength, and there is no version of you tonight that is more forgiven than the one lying down. It is written that if we confess our sins He is faithful and just to forgive us and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness, and the Holy Spirit is named in Scripture as the one who bears witness with our spirit about what we now are.
And you are allowed to stop. That may be the hardest sentence in this whole article for you to receive, so let it be plain. Stopping is not carelessness and it is not presumption and it is not the fire being left unfed. It is agreement with a verdict already spoken by the only one entitled to speak it. You are being handed back your own nights, and the One who finished it is the one handing them over. John 19:30 is where He said it is finished, and His Spirit is the one who turns three words spoken outside a city wall into a lamp being turned off early.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, in the bedroom, before the lamp goes off. Not because the words are a lever and God is a mechanism, since the mechanism is exactly what is being taken out of your life. Because you are in Christ, and He is the one who finished it and then sat down, so the standing to speak over your own nights came from Him and was never earned by seven thousand careful repetitions. Scripture is the ground under each line and the Holy Spirit is the current in it. Speak, and leave the outcome with Him, because how He answers and when is His to decide and He may answer in His own way.
- Prayer I have said since 2004, you were heard the first night you were said, and you were never on trial. His word says it is finished, in a tense that means done and standing done, and nothing was left over for me to keep covering. I am saying something else to God tonight.
- Fear that the first one did not count, get out of this bedroom, in the name of Jesus. I am forgiven at full strength and I am lying down, and the fire I have been feeding was never mine to feed. Scripture says where there is forgiveness there is no more offering for sin, and the One who said it had the standing to close it.
- Lord, You finished it and then You sat down, and You have not stood back up since to look at my file again. Your word says it is finished and Your Spirit is the one who makes those three words land in a dark bedroom. I am turning the lamp off first tonight and saying thank you where the apology used to go.
